Synthetic Turf Pitch (STP) - Floodlighting - Queen Elisabeth's School, Wimborne, Dorset

Sector : Recreation

The removal of a disfunctional Redgra surface and the provision of a multi-sport sand dressed pitch intended primarily for hockey with 5 or 7 aside football as a second choice was the basis for this project. The facility was to be available for school and adjacent sports centre use and the power supply to the floodlighting system needed to be independently metered.

The project was let on a Design and Build basis with Worldwise engaged to produce a Performance Specification for the STP floodlighting system, amenity lighting to the pitch from adjacent buildings, water supply for pitch irrigation and for negotiation with the electricity supply company for a new service to feed the STP and the Sports Centre (which had hitherto been fed from the school's supply) as a separate enabling contract. Post contract duties included checking Contractor's design proposals, cost control on M&E elements and installation quality checks.

The STP comprised a 55m x 91.4m area plus 3m perimeter/spectator zone, fencing and eight 13m high floodlighting lowerable columns were employed to achieve 350 Lux maintained average horizontal illuminance across the pitch as required by Sport England and SAPCA standards. Power supply sockets were included as column mounted units on either side of the pitch and electrical service ducts were installed around the pitch for the possible future provision of CCTV and/or audio systems.
