Vitality Stadium, AFC Bournemouth Premier League Stadium Upgrades

With promotion into the Premier League Bournemouth Football Club needed to upgrade the facilities at Their Vitality Stadium to meet minimum standards for premier league. Much of which is to do with being able to ensure TV coverage regardless of weather or power outages. They needed to developed and grow their existing media hosting and support facilities. A new modular building with state of the art training facilities was constructed adjacent their training pitches allowing the old training facility to be converted to media suites.

The Premiership also have highly specific requirements for resilient data and power supply systems for their outside broadcast equipment, Hawkeye and pitch heating systems to ensure match day coverage continues even if there is a loss of electrical supply. Furthermore the old pitch lighting all had to be upgraded to meet broadcasting standards involving new LED lighting and control gear.

Initially Worldwise made an assessment of the existing supply capacity and advised on costs for improving supply resilience to meet Premiership standards. Through the use of detailed questioning, clarification and investigation of the specified requirements we were able to provide a cost plan which reduced the initial demands and still met the specification. Our detailed design of expected site wide capacity resulted in the current 375kVA maximum demand increasing to 800kVA to accommodate the new requirements. After extensive cost/benefit analysis it was decided that a new 560KVA generator would be provided to ensure electrical supply resilience. A new £80,000 electrical switch panel was required in the switch room and £120,000 was spent on the distribution to the new and upgraded facilities.

With the club having to remain in use during the works, the new Pavilion had to be open within two months and the 1500kW pitch heating had to be operational before the first frost of the winter. New gas and water supplies were required to the Pavilion as well. Installations were particularly complicated as the existing incoming gas and water service connections were located on opposite sides of the site to that of the new pitch heating plant and the Pavilion.

Calculation determined that existing gas and water infrastructure could extend to the Pavilion but that the pitch heating would need a new/upgraded gas supply. To meet the programme the existing gas and water services were extended to the Pavilion allowing it to open on time.

Multiple LPG and natural gas options were drawn up to determine the best life cycle cost solution for getting a new gas supply to the pitch heating boilers. These involved options for new above and below ground LPG tanks, connection to a high capacity medium pressure gas main, connection to a low pressure gas main that was located in a nearby residential street and connection to a low pressure gas main that was in a playing field. The analysis concluded that connection to the low pressure gas main in the street was the cheapest option, so this option was progressed.

The installation of the gas main posed a particular problem as works were estimated to take 6 weeks to complete, they were due to be carried out during the football season and the main had to extend from one end of the site to the other via an access road that skirted the perimeter of football club stadium. This meant that fans would have to cross the main to gain access to the stadium during match days. To overcome the hazard/risk associated with installing the main in open trenches it was decided to micro bore the installation.
