Port Regis School – Feasibility Report

Client: Port Regis School, Dorset

Commenced:November 2022

Completion:January 2023

Port Regis school is a private preparatory school with 250 children between the ages of 8 and 13.  It has a mixture of day pupils and boarders.  The school sits on a 140 acre site and its buildings are a mixture of Grade 2 Listed historic building and a number of other buildings constructed from 1960 onwards.  The Listed building has a heat demand of 750kW and the four other buildings considered in our report had a combined heat load of 850kW.

The school are already committed to a significant project to install a large ground array of PV panels to generate on site electricity.

Our brief was to produce a report that could assist with the school’s ambition to be carbon neutral well before 2050.

Using ground source heat pumps to operate a lead heat source with water to water heat pumps employed to elevate water temperatures to near current temperatures (generated by gas-fired boilers) was proposed as the most likely way of meeting the client’s goals.    Investigations into the number and length of boreholes needed and the most environmentally benign heat pumps (those that use refrigerants with global warming potentials of less than 10) that could be employed for the task were undertaken so that realistic budget costs could be provided in the report.  Five options were provided and costed for the client’s consideration.
