Work Experience

We continue to offer 14 and 15 year olds a week’s taster session to learn about the exciting industry that we work in. The week allows the students to try out CAD software to draw a building and then create a thermal model of the building from the drawing.

They can perform heat losses and heat gain calculations from the model and then work through options for heating the building and select appropriate equipment. Different software is used to carry out lighting design for the building. Renewable technologies are explored and suggestions put forward by the students for adoption on their project.

Visits to construction sites provide them with an opportunity to see what goes on above ceilings, in walls and plantrooms and the complexity of what is needed to make modern buildings habitable.

The students work with different members of staff for each part of the project so that they have an opportunity to chat with them and ask questions about what drew them into the industry and why they stay.
