Replacement MacMillan Unit for the Christchurch Hospital, Dorset.

A new build 2,713m2 2-storey, 20 bed hospice/respite care facility for cancer sufferers the building incorporates 4 consulting rooms, administration areas for MacMillan ground and community staff and fundraising personnel. Rooms for resident activities, physiotherapy and aromatherapy and family rooms were also provided.

The project is currently at RIBA Stage 3 with an agreed design philosophy for all M&E systems. The building has recently just changed location due to other developments on the site.

Worldwise have been engaged to undertake full detailed designs and management of all M&E systems to RIBA Stage 7. Services provision includes medical gases, catering supplies and other M&E systems. We have provided advice on summertime overheating risk mitigation measures, solar PV provision and natural ventilation proposals for the Café, Activities and Dining Rooms.

Given the vulnerable natures of patient’s health in the building and the high incoming mains water temperatures that can arise in the area during the summer it has been decided that the incoming water will be mechanically cooled to reduce the risk of Legionella generation. Systems have been designed in accordance with HTM’s, HBN’s and Building Regulations.
