Art Studio Infill Building & Science Area Upgrade

Works to these two areas of the campus were part of a larger contract that included a new sports building. Refer to “Sports Sector” for details.

The infill of a courtyard area of the site provided the location for the art studio as it was suited to the provision of northlights and high level perimeter glazing for daylighting the room whilst maximising wall space for display purposes. Natural ventilation was incorporated into the high level glazing by way of openable lights. Artificial lighting was required to provide good colour rendition and flexibility for general, occasional and adjustable display purposes. Control of this was kept simple using manual multiple switching. Heating was effected by extension of the existing LPHW system and mounting flat panel radiators above worktops so that displays could be mounted on them if necessary.
An area of the studio included IT facilities for graphics work and computerised manipulation of images.

Two science laboratory teaching spaces and a preparation room were completely upgraded to include new island laboratory benching that was serviced with water, gas and power via accessible services ducts in the floor. Serviced fume cupboards, interactive white boards and conventional white boards were included in the teaching spaces as were safety transformers and knock-off panic isolators on power distribution circuits. Mechanical ventilation was provided for purging the rooms after periods of heavy use or when black-out was required in the larger teaching space.

A fully detailed design with full site visit duties was undertaken by Worldwise Limited.
