A two-storey extension to the school was provided for a ne dance studio and fitness gymnasium that could be let out to the public outside of school hours. Associated changing rooms and a complete refurbishment of the existing school sports hall was included in the scheme. Heat pumps were our choice to provide heating and cooling to these spaces and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery was designed to maintain a pleasant, odour free environment because windows needed to remain shut to prevent noise breakout and nuisance. Fabric “sock type supply air ducts were employed in the gym so that ceiling voids could minimised to achieve a lofty feel to the room.
The existing LPHW heating system was extended to serve radiant heating panels at high level in the original sports hall and new high level openable windows provided good natural ventilation.
Two existing double classroom spaces were completely refurbished to provide state of the art design and technology workshops with all the tradition equipment plus laser printers and even a brazing hearth. Fume and dust extraction systems were installed for HSE compliance and mixture of fan convector and radiant panels heaters were employed in rooms as appropriate to their purpose. The equipment specific electrical power supplies were provided along with all the necessary safety switching and emergency switching to meet HSE requirements.
Extensive upgrades to the site’s power supply and distribution infrastructure were needed to service the new areas and to allow the project to be constructed in a phased manner. Upgrades to the IT system infrastructure were also undertaken.
